Athletics competition is a big part of the K-12 education landscape in South Carolina. More than 84,000 young people participate in a wide array of boys’ and girls’ sports. SC High School League commissioner Jerome Singleton shares his thoughts on the role of athletics in public education and addresses trends in sports safety, physical conditioning and weight training, how choice within public school systems affects teams, and the growing tendency of athletes to specialize in one sport or skill.
